Both sides of the promo card for the Proteges insert featured a foil background of their teams – Chicago Bears for Salaam, and Miami Dolphins for Kirby. As it turned out, their NFL paths went in opposite directions.
While Salaam won the Heisman Trophy and rushed for over 1,000 yards in his rookie season (1995), his playing time decreased quickly afterward. By 1997, he was on his way out of the league. He passed away in 2016.
Kirby never rushed for 1,000 yards, but he lasted 10 years in the NFL, playing for Miami, San Francisco, Cleveland and Oakland. He actually was a better receiver than running back, snagging 333 passes for 3,222 yards. He even threw the ball well, completing 4 of 6 passes for 85 yards and 3 touchdowns.
